The undefeated Cougars fought back an aggressive offense from the CWU Wildcats throughout the game and sustained several injuries. Despite the setbacks, the Cougars played hard the entire 80 minutes and scored consistently.
Both teams had great defense, but BYU played really well and kept CWU at bay most of the time, said David Smyth, BYU rugby head coach. Even when our players were hurt they turned in a winning performance. Nothing stands between us now and the final championship game.
Linehan, a scrum half affectionately known as Jonny Rugby by fans, is a New Zealand native and All-American. He scored the first try of the game. CWU then took the game up a notch and scored a try but were only able to get in a penalty kick for the remainder of the game. Other BYU players who scored include Joshua Whippy, Joe Pikula, Ryan Blaser and Arawa Elkington, who scored an especially impressive try of a stolen CWU pass.
Central Washington s front line was strong, Linehan said. Our forwards and backs communicated really well throughout the match allowing several us Cougars to score. Being able to play at South Field with our loyal crowd helped us big time.
Fans from both teams filled the South Field, cheering loudly for their respective team. Among the fans were close to 100 past BYU Rugby players air filters who were there as part of the BYU Rugby 50 th Anniversary air filters Celebration festivities. They flooded the field during halftime and were honored by current team members and fans alike.

The win today means BYU will advance to play University of California in the Penn Mutual Varsity Cup National Championship at Rio Tinto Stadium on May 2. California defeated Navy 57-15 to advance the championship. The BYU Cougars have played against the University of California Golden Bears the past two Varsity Cup games, defeating the team 27 24 in 2013 and 43 33 in 2014.
Aside from BYU, the Varsity Cup features such teams as the U.S. Air Force Academy, the University of California, Dartmouth College, air filters Notre Dame and the U.S. Naval Academy. These teams set the standard for elite player development in the United States. The Cougars have won the title of national champions in 2009, 2012, 2013 and 2014.

Join Craig and Cindy Corrie in Ellensburg, Washington as they help kick off Central Washington University s (CWU’s) third annual First Amendment Festival which runs May 11 – May 14 2015. To honor the First Amendment, the week features a series of events in celebration canicula of the freedoms canicula of speech, religion, the press and peaceful assembly and demonstration. Events are free and open to the public.
The festival opens Monday, May 11 at 4 PM with An American Activist in Palestine: Remembering Rachel Corrie featuring keynote speakers Craig and Cindy Corrie, parents of the 23-year-old political activist who was killed by an Israel Defense Forces bulldozer while protecting the home of a Palestinian family in the Gaza Strip. Following the speech, there will be clips from a documentary about Rachel and three CWU theater students will perform excerpts from the play, My Name is Rachel Corrie. A panel discussion with Rachel’s parents and various CWU professors will conclude canicula the evening. The event is located in the Student Union and Recreation Center (SURC) canicula Ballroom.
